In 1993 Opera Delaware produced The Enormous Egg based on the popular book of the same name written in 1956 by Oliver Butterworth. The music was composed by Evelyn Swenson and Dan Butterworth was hired to make the singing dinosaur, Uncle Beasley. A singer stood behind Uncle Beasley and manipulated the long mouth to make it appear that the voice came from the creature.
Here are some pictures of Beasley. The interior frame was spot-welded. Chicken wire was placed on top for shaping and to give a skin effect when lycra material was stretched across the pieces. Rubber balls were used for eyes. Long time Butterworth Productions collaborator Dave Clarke of Bristol, RI assisted in the construction and painting.
